Why does my iPhone restart by itself?

Last updated:

An iPhone that restarts on its own, sometimes every few minutes, is usually not "slow" or "full": iOS stopped itself on purpose because something it relies on stopped answering. Each time, it writes a panic log that names what it was waiting for.

What the panic log says

The first lines of a panic log carry its panic string: a short technical sentence such as missing sensor(s) followed by a sensor's code, or a watchdog that timed out, or a part of the processor that reported an error. The rest of the file is detail for engineers: the iOS version, the model's identifier, what was running.

The most common panic on recent iPhones is a sensor that stops reporting. iOS checks a set of sensors at start-up and every few minutes; when one is missing, it restarts the phone, and the cycle repeats.

Why the code alone is not enough

Sensor codes are short names inside Apple's software, and the same code can point at a different part on another model: which flex cable or board carries a sensor changes from one iPhone to the next. Reading a log without its model leads to the wrong part, and to a repair that changes nothing.

How PhoneBox reads it

PhoneBox reads the whole log on your iPhone, finds the model that wrote it, and matches the panic against rules written from public repair sources. It tells you:

  • what failed, in one sentence;
  • which part is most likely behind it on that model, and how sure that is;
  • why the log points there, and what to check next;
  • the codes, the matched rule and its sources, one tap below.

A log that matches no rule is reported as unknown, never guessed.

What to do next

  1. Find the panic log and open it in PhoneBox.
  2. Check the simple things the result lists first, such as a cable that may not be seated.
  3. Take the result to a repair shop: it names the part and the codes a technician needs.

PhoneBox does not repair anything. It tells you what the log says, so a repair starts with the right part.
